@posten.lifts finishes off his Arnold prep with a 590lb. squat, 400lb. bench press, and 605lb. deadlift! He goes into the Raw Challenge next Friday with a great chance at a podium spot, which was a goal we set out for after last years Arnold, and it looks like that has a good chance of becoming a reality! 
To say this training block hasnt gone as planned though would be an understatement, as a lot of curveballs led to many changes throughout this 6 week block, including a taper/deload week substituted in during week 3. The prior training block to this was Patricks best ever and he was absolutely crushing it, to the point that we were looking at breaking that 1700lb. total barrier. But something super weird happened during Patricks deload week when he spent a couple days in Colorado skiing. When he came back, everything was off. At first I thought it was possibly a fatigue issue, but we eventually came to realize that a couple days of skiing in a very forward and knee flexion dominant position somehow transferred to his squat and deadlift. On squats he was pushing forward onto his toes and deadlifts he was way out in front of the bar, and for someone as experienced as Patrick it was fairly shocking just how much regression a couple days of skiing caused to his movement patterns. So over the last couple weeks we have really put a big emphasis on mid-foot pressure, and adjusted much of his deadlift work this week to be a bunch of singles so he can have as much practice as possible doing a competition single. Fortunately the slight changes are working, and each week has gradually gotten better. We know the strength is there, so its just a matter of continued progression with technique and having things all come together next Friday on the big stage!

This was a question asked yesterday by some people visiting our lab. Dr. Jenkins (my advisor) was talking about the really awesome research our lab is doing on metabolism & exercise related health outcomes.⁣
⁣
And it’s true. We do all this work, research, publish in fancy journals. But how many people are seeking out that info? How many people not in our field are reading that research?⁣
⁣
Most importantly — how many people who NEED this type of scientific education on their health, nutrition, fitness even know or care to look?⁣
⁣
Unfortunately... not many. We have a health crisis in our country related to life style diseases. And well, a whole lot of people who either don’t care or are being brainwashed by Dr. Oz bullshit and celebrity diets. ⁣

Not enough scientists are speaking up. Out here sharing what we do. Why our work is hard, and messy, and not perfect, but important.⁣
⁣
That we wake up early and roll into labs to answer one small question at a time in hopes it can translate into something big.⁣
⁣
Science is an important public service. But maybe not enough of us are talking about our work and why it’s so freaking important.⁣
⁣
Blame imposter syndrome. Blame “business” but scientific communication is VITAL in the health fields right now.⁣
⁣
So Hey, I’m Lyss. I’m a PhD student working super hard to bridge the gap of science and practical education. And every day I come on this app to talk about the work I do BECAUSE IT IS FOR YOU. ⁣

Sure I get accolades and and presentations and all that jazz. But my work means nothing if it can’t be used to better others health.⁣
⁣
So that’s why I keep showing up, learning, sharing, and debunking the BS along the way.⁣
⁣
Because you deserve better.⁣
You deserve science literacy.⁣
You deserve to know how to take control of your health.⁣
⁣
